Privacy Policy for the Yarny App
Last updated: November 2026
This privacy policy applies to the Android app Yarny (package name com.miktoya.yarny). It explains which data is processed in the app, where it is stored and what rights you have.
At a glance
- Yarny works completely offline. The app has no permission to access the internet and does not communicate with any server.
- You do not need an account and you do not have to sign in.
- Everything you create in Yarny is stored exclusively on your device. We, the provider, do not receive this data and cannot see it.
- Yarny contains no advertising, no analytics or tracking tools, no crash reporting and does not use an advertising ID.
- Data only leaves your device when you initiate it yourself, for example when you export a backup or share a PDF file, and only to the destination you choose.
Controller and contact
Provider of the app and controller within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), to the extent we process any personal data at all:
- Erik Che Kreinbucher, trading as Miktoya
- Gaugerichtsweg 13a, 6832 Sulz, Austria
- Email for questions about Yarny and privacy: yarny@miktoya.com
- Phone: +43 677 61461351
- Website: miktoya.com
We have not appointed a data protection officer because there is no legal obligation to do so. You can reach us about any privacy matter at the email address above.
Principle: no data collection by us
Yarny is designed so that your content does not leave your device unless you take action. The app contains no components that send data to us or to third parties. We do not operate any servers for the app and have no access to the data you enter in Yarny.
We, as the provider, therefore do not process any personal data for the content you store in the app. If you store information about other people in Yarny, such as the body measurements of family members, this takes place on your device and under your responsibility. Under Art. 2(2)(c) GDPR, the GDPR does not apply to purely personal or household use.
What data Yarny stores on your device
To provide its features, the app stores the data you enter locally on your device:
- Projects: name, needle or hook sizes, notes, row counter, tracked working time and log entries, yarn usage, costs and additional cost items, photos, completion date, and links to patterns, yarns and people.
- Patterns: name, PDF files and images, cover image, source link, category, craft (knitting or crochet), purchase price and notes.
- Yarn inventory: name, color, color number, yarn weight, fiber and fiber content, length and weight, price, source (link), stock and usage, folders and notes.
- Profiles (people): name, optional profile photo, body measurements and notes.
- App settings: currency and an optional hourly rate for cost calculation.
- Settings on your device: the app language and the appearance (light, dark or same as the system).
This data is kept in a database and in files in the app's private storage area. Android protects this area from access by other apps. The data is used only to provide Yarny's features to you and remains stored until you delete it or uninstall the app.
Photos, camera and files
- Photos from your gallery are selected through the Android photo picker. Yarny only receives the images you select there and stores a copy of them in the app's private storage. The app does not request general access to your photos or media.
- Photos taken with the camera are captured with your device's camera app, which Yarny opens for this purpose. Yarny itself has no camera permission. The captured photo is handed over to Yarny and stored locally.
- Files such as PDF patterns or a backup file are selected through the Android file picker. Yarny only accesses the file you select and, for patterns, stores a copy in the app's private storage.
Backup, export and sharing
- Backup: On your command, Yarny creates a ZIP file containing your projects, patterns, yarns, profiles and log entries, including photos and PDF files, as well as the currency and hourly rate settings. It does not contain the app language or the appearance (light, dark or same as the system): these are settings on your device, which you choose again if needed after restoring on another device. Using the Android save dialog or share sheet, you decide where the file is saved or sent, for example to a folder on your device, to a cloud storage service or by email.
- Restore: You select a backup file. The data in the app is then replaced with the contents of the backup. Language and appearance remain unchanged.
- PDF export: You can export projects, patterns and your yarn inventory as PDF files. Yarny hands the file over to the Android share sheet, where you choose the app you use to save, send or print it.
All of this only happens when you initiate it, and only to the destination you choose. If you hand a file over to another service, such as a cloud storage service, a messaging app or a print service, the privacy terms of that service govern any further processing. We have no access to it.
Please note: the backup file is not encrypted and contains all of your content from Yarny, including photos and body measurements. Keep it safe and only share it with recipients you trust.
No automatic cloud backup
Yarny is excluded from Android's automatic data backup. Your app data is therefore not automatically uploaded to a cloud backup and is not automatically transferred to a new device when you switch devices. To take your data to another device, use the app's backup feature.
Links and email
- Web links that you enter in Yarny, for example to the source of a yarn or a pattern, and the links in the legal texts, such as to their online version, open in your browser. Yarny itself does not load anything from the internet. The privacy terms of the respective website operator and of your browser apply to your visit.
- Feedback by email: The feedback link in the settings opens your email app with our address and a prefilled subject that contains the app's version number. If no email app is installed, Yarny shows the address so you can copy it. Only when you send the email yourself do we receive your email address, your name if provided, the subject and the content of your message. We use this information solely to handle your request. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR insofar as your request concerns the use of the app, and otherwise our legitimate interest in answering inquiries under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. We use an email provider as a processor to operate our mailbox. We delete your message as soon as it is no longer needed to handle your request, at the latest three years after the correspondence has ended, unless statutory retention obligations require otherwise.
Google Play
Yarny is distributed through Google Play. When you download, install and update the app, Google processes data, for example about your Google account and your device, under its own responsibility. You can find more information in Google's Privacy Policy.
Through the Google Play Console, Google provides us with statistics, for example the number of installations, device types, Android versions and countries. If you have allowed your device to send usage and diagnostics data to Google, we also receive reports created by Google about crashes and stability issues. We receive this information in aggregated form or without details that identify you as a person. We use it to fix bugs and improve the app. To the extent this involves personal data, the legal basis is our legitimate interest in a stable app under Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.
If you post a public review on Google Play, we, like everyone else, can see your public profile name and your review text and can reply publicly.
No disclosure to third parties
Since Yarny does not send any data to us, we do not disclose any data from the app to third parties and do not sell any data. Data from Yarny only reaches third parties if you share or export a file yourself, as described above.
Deleting your data
- Individual entries such as projects, patterns, yarns, people or photos can be deleted in the app at any time. The related files are removed from the app's storage as well.
- All data is deleted when you uninstall Yarny or clear the app's storage in the Android settings.
- Backup and PDF files that you have saved or shared outside the app are not deleted by this. You need to delete them yourself if required.
Since we do not receive your app data, we cannot and do not need to delete it for you. The retention period stated above applies to emails you send us.
Data security
Your data is stored in the app's protected, private storage area, which other apps cannot access, and is not transmitted over the internet. To protect your data, we recommend using a screen lock on your device and keeping your backup files in a safe place.
Children
Yarny is intended for adults and is not specifically designed for children.
Your rights
Under the GDPR, you have in particular the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object (Art. 21). These rights relate to data that we actually process, mainly your emails to us. To exercise them, contact yarny@miktoya.com.
You manage your data in the app yourself: you can view, change and delete it in Yarny at any time and export it as a file using the backup feature.
If you believe that the processing of your data violates data protection law, you can lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. In Austria, this is the Austrian Data Protection Authority:
- Österreichische Datenschutzbehörde (Austrian Data Protection Authority)
- Barichgasse 40–42, 1030 Vienna, Austria
- Email: dsb@dsb.gv.at
- Website: www.dsb.gv.at
You can also contact the supervisory authority of the EU member state in which you live or work.
Changes to this privacy policy
We update this privacy policy when the app's features or the legal situation change. The current version is available in the app and at miktoya.com/yarny/privacy. Should we offer features in the future that cause data to leave your device, we will inform you in the app beforehand and, where required, ask for your consent.

Keine Weitergabe an Dritte
Wende dich dafür an yarny@miktoya.com.
- E-Mail: dsb@dsb.gv.at
- Website: www.dsb.gv.at
